A classifier is a type of machine learning algorithm used to assign a class label to a data input. It is a problem of identifying which of a set of categories an observation belongs to. Classifiers are trained using labeled data and can receive unlabeled data as inputs and output classification labels for each input. There are both supervised and unsupervised classifiers, and the most commonly used include decision trees, naive Bayes classifiers, and support vector machines. Classification can be thought of as two separate problems – binary classification and multiclass classification. In linguistics, a classifier is a word or affix that accompanies nouns and can be considered to “classify” a noun depending on the type of its referent.
